The word headache comes up frequently in my practice. Throughout the 6 years of my career I have seen a vast array of different kinds of headaches; from tension, stress, medical, long hours of technology use, dehydration to even those chronic migraines.
The most outstanding cause of headaches which I personally have seen in practice is stress.
Stress is a huge factor in many headache cases but what I have seen as a co-factor in these headache cases is the amount of tension held throughout the jaw. Jaw tension can be a result from clenching or grinding teeth.
Clenching is a natural stress response and the first thing to do is to be aware of it. Habbits such at clenching can be also influence by medication, so starting with a simple daily "check in" can be the start to decreasing the tension held throughout the jaw, resulting in fewer headaches.
Simple "check in" -
Take a moment to pause the mind and ask yourself am I clenching?
Do I have tension in my jaw?
Are my teeth sitting hard against each other?
If the answer is yes, start to relax the jaw by dropping the jaw slightly. Sit the tongue in the middle of the mouth space and release the tension in the forehead.
Slowly take a few breaths and go about your day.
Doing these "check ins" more than once throughout the day is beneficial but as I said, it can take some practice.
